Andrew Owens

I am a postdoctoral researchers at Prof Manos Tsakiris' Lab of Action & Body, where I am investigating the interactions between multi-sensory integration, interoception and social awareness, using a wide range of behavioural, psychophysiological and neurophysiological methods (fMRI, EEG recording of autonomic responses). My PhD (supervisors: Prof Christopher Mathias, Prof Hugo Critchley, Dr David Low) was carried out at University College London (Institute of Neurology) and Imperial College London (Brain Sciences) and investigated functional (pseudo) syncope, profiling cognitive-affective symptoms in disorders of autonomic overexcitation (postural tachycardia syndrome, vasovagal syncope, essential hyperhidrosis), the effects of autonomic arousal and dysfunction on interoception and orienting responses in health and dysautonomia. During my postdoc at UCL/IoN (supervisor: Dr Valeria Iodice), I examined cardiovascular and thermoregulatory autonomic dysfunction in autism spectrum disorder, comorbid functional movement disorder and dysautonomia (in collaboration with Prof Mark Edwards, St George’s) and utilised predictive coding frameworks (in collaboration with Prof Karl Friston and Dr Sasha Ondobaka, UCL) to analyse autonomic function and dysfunction, thereby quantifying the effects of dysautonomia on homeostasis.

Research Interests

My work focuses on the interaction between the central and autonomic nervous systems and how this bidirectional relationship influences psychological and behavioural processes.
